Denim Jackets That Get Better With Age
A denim jacket should start stiff and slightly wrong, then slowly become the most wearable thing you own. We wore six for ninety days to see which ones faded gracefully and which just fell apart.
Weight Tells You Everything
Lightweight denim (under 10oz) feels soft immediately but fades flat and wears through at the cuffs. Heavier 12 to 14oz denim needs a fortnight to break in, then moulds to your shoulders and shows honest fades along the seams.
| Jacket | Weight | Fades | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavyweight selvedge | 13.5oz | Beautiful | 9.0 |
| Classic mid-weight | 12oz | Nice | 8.4 |
| Light fashion denim | 9oz | Flat | 6.6 |
Wash less, wear more
Spot clean when you can and wash cold, inside out, rarely. Wait at least a month between washes at first; the fades you love come from wearing, not washing.
Fit Notes
- Sleeves should hit your wrist, not your knuckles.
- Shoulders need to sit clean — a jacket that slips off the shoulder will never break in right.
- Leave a little room for a hoodie underneath come autumn.
Our Verdict
The heavyweight selvedge jacket was stiff and awkward for two weeks, then became our favourite thing in the wardrobe. The fades at ninety days already look earned.
We loved
- Moulds to your shape
- Fades develop character
- Lasts for years
Worth knowing
- Stiff at first
- Pricier than fast denim
